Karan Johar Recalls Mother Hiroo Johar Was Concerned About His Directorial Debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai; Filmmaker Says, ‘For A Second, I Questioned Myself’
Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar is all set to complete 25 years in the Hindi entertainment industry. Ever since making his directorial debut with Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji starrer Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998, he changed the trajectory of romantic movies in Bollywood. However, did you know that his own parents, filmmaker Yash Johar and Hiroo Johar, were sceptical of him making his debut? Not only did his father fell asleep while listening to the narration of the movie, but his mother tried to convince him to give up the film on the first day of the shoot.

Karan recently attended the Toronto International Film Festival, where he recalled both the incidents and expressed how they weren't inclined towards him directing such a big scale movie. Recalling the incidents back-to-back, he shared that his mother had woken him up early in the morning at 5 o’clock to ask him if he was sure about directing the movie. Quoted by Indian Express, he said, “I woke up and said ‘what happened?’ I thought something had happened because she was sitting at my bedside. And she said ‘do you know where to place the camera?’” ALSO READ: THROWBACK! Karan Johar Says, ‘I Am Done With Kangana Ranaut’ Asks Her To Leave The Film Industry! When he told her he knows, she tried to persuade him by telling him that if he wants she will call Aditya Chopra, the producer of the film, and request him to direct it. She told him how she will support him even if he backs out at the last minute. While talking about his mother’s scepticism, as she does not watch movies, he opened up about how his father, the late filmmaker, fell asleep during the narration. Talking about what happened after, Karan explained, “He said, ‘Gaana aa gaya tha.’ I said, ‘Main gaa nahi raha tha’.” ALSO READ: Shah Rukh Khan’s Hillarious Dig On Karan Johar’s Age While Sitting Besides Wife Gauri Khan Leaves The Fans Chuckling

The 51-year-old went on to say how his mother’s words got to him when reached the set. He shared, “When they asked ‘Where would you like the frame?’ For a second, I questioned (myself). My mother’s voice came in my head and I was like shayad maa theek kehti hai ki mujhe nahi pata camera kahan rakhna hai.” He added that he finally got his groove back and was confident in what he has to do next.

On the work front, he recently made his directorial comeback with Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt starrer Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The movie was celebrated by the critics as well as the audiences for its on point casting, songs as well as the necessary topics it addressed.
